Learn about Spironolactone

Topical spironolactone is commonly used to treat acne, especially in cases where hormonal factors play a role. It is particularly beneficial for adult women with acne, as it helps reduce excess oil production and the occurrence of inflammatory acne lesions. Hormonal acne often manifests as spots on the sides of the face or lower part of the face such as chin and jawline.

Spironolactone, in its oral form, is known for its anti-androgenic effects, which means it can block the action of male hormones (androgens) that contribute to the development of acne. One of the primary mechanisms of topical spironolactone is its ability to inhibit sebum (oil) production in the skin. By targeting the androgen receptors in the oil glands, it helps regulate oil secretion, contributing to a reduction in acne lesions and preventing the formation of new ones.

Oral spironolactone is a tablet medication that is used off licence for the treatment of acne. Topical spironolactone can be a good solution that doesn’t cause systemic side effects but can help with hormonal causes of acne at the skin level. Unlike oral spironolactone, topical spironolactone is considered safe to use in all genders.
